LIPOSTRUCTURE (Fat Transfer)
As we age, we lose volume in our face resulting in an older and more tired look. In addition to undesirable skin changes contributing to wrinkle formation, the process of lipodystrophy begins in most adults in their early 30’s. Much like a balloon is smooth and wrinkle free when full of air, the appearance and texture is much different when deflated. While traditional surgical correction and skin treatments address skin excess and quality, facial augmentation for replacement of volume loss is relatively new.

Despite being effective in volume replacement, popular injectable fillers are unfortunately expensive, synthetic, and do not provide long term results. Lipostructure involves augmentation of areas in need with fat cells harvested from the body. By using one’s fat, the result can be permanent with no risk of adverse reaction. The procedure is safe, minimally invasive with minimal downtime and discomfort, and provides patients with a permanent, natural result.
PROCEDURE
The procedure is usually performed with light sedation and local anesthesia for patient comfort. While the most common location for graft harvest is from the lateral thigh, fat can be harvested from anywhere. Thru small needles, the fat is injected to areas of need in the face.
The eyebrow
The position and fullness of the brow have an enormous impact on facial expression. Lipostructure alone can improve both, resulting in a natural, more refreshed look.
Lower eye, cheek, and laugh lines
As we age, the fat in the cheeks dissolves and falls, adding to the tired look and contributing to the formation of laugh lines. A significant improvement in facial expression can be achieved with liposculpture.
Other areas of augmention include forehead wrinkles, temples, chin crease, jowls, and neck lift/liposuction deformities.
RECOVERY
After the procedure and a short recovery time from the sedation, you may go home. Any pain or discomfort that follows surgery can be controlled with oral medication. While absolute bed rest is not necessary, limited activity is advised for the first 48-72 hours. While there will likely be some minimal swelling which may persist for some weeks, most patients can return to light duty work in 4-5 days. Patients should refrain from vigorous activity for 4-6 weeks total to help swelling resolve more quickly.
EXPECTATIONS
Previously, lipostructure was unreliable and unpredictable. Given the newer techniques and more precise handling of the grafts, we can accurately predict the fat absorption depending on the location of injection. Typically, most patients are overinjected in anticipation of the resorption. Any effect that persists after 6-8 weeks is usually permanent.
