Mentoplasty has been so dramatically enhanced through the use of laterally extended implants which enhance the entire mandibular contouring. The goal of augmentation mentoplasty is to improve the contour of the mandible.  The mandible defines the lower third of the face and creates an aesthetic transition into the neck. The width of both the mandible and the mentum must be proportional to the patient’s overall facial contour.

Although not usually considered as a technique for facial rejuvenation, augmentation mentoplasty can be highly effective in dealing with the most important features of aging, prejowl sulci and poor submental contouring.

The procedure can be done under local anesthesia if the patient desires it.  Typically, a small incision under the chin is sufficient to introduce the implant in place.  When using this “external” approach, the patient does not have diet restrictions during the post operative recovery time.

The post operative discomfort is minimal and they can return to work in approximately one week after surgery.
